starlight
Jill French

in the stillness of a purple sunset
a leaf turned so softly
i didn't even notice
the burning had stopped

and wounds that threatened forever
faded like stars
from a desolate sky
like furious scars on newborn flesh

and in the moonlight i began to build
i rose from an ocean of tears
to draw my own sunrise on an empty horizon.

beneath starlight i unbuilt
chiseled away at the steel
i've worn so long as skin
removed invisible bricks
intent on caging me in.

suddenly i smile
turn my head to wish upon a star
no longer wondering
where
you
are.
