Archivist's Thoughts- 7- Patience
Written by Jedi Archivist Kethrim

Patience. We all know that is a necessary part of being a Jedi, but it can be difficult to achieve. We need patience with our teachers, for if they are teaching us something we feel that we already know, perhaps they are trying to show us a different facet of it, or perhaps we need to understand the topic more throughly. It is important not to become frustrated, because we cannot learn very well through frustration. Do not worry if something seems redundant, but take the opportunity to study it more deeply, and find your own lesson within the topic.

Every day, we are faced with situations that try our patience. How do we deal with these? We must practice patience. In one of the Jedi Apprentice books, Qui-Gon said, "Patience is not a gift, but a lesson to be relearned daily." If you look at patience as something you must practice every day, you can make your patience and tolerance grow, because you are looking at it in the long term, instead of simply one situation at a time. However, while you are keeping an eye on the long-term benefits, you must deal with one situation at a time. If you feel yourself becoming frustrated and impatient, slow down, take a deep breath, and consider what benefits getting frustrated will have. It is very likely that the situation will turn out better if you act with patience, instead of irritation and rash decisions. In situations where things are moving too quickly for you to physically take a step back and look at what's going on, just try to calm down your mind, and that will help you become more patient.

The best way to become more patient is to be more patient. One action leads to another, so the more you practice being patient, the easier it will be. Patience allows you to think and discover better solutions, and this will help you become a better person and a better Jedi.

The following segment was added by Jedi Meldog:

"Something I would like to add to the above post is learn patience but don't turn it into an excuse. Do not turn patience into procrastination which can happen many times. The old saying, "patience is a virtue." I have heard many people say this when there is something they do not want to do. A part of being a Jedi is accepting the responsibilities of life and fulfilling them as best we can. Putting everything off till the last minute or longer can have many bad repercussions. Take a hard look at yourself. Have you noticed youself guilty of this? Have you said have patience when you really knew you were only saying it because you did not want to do? Make sure you can see the distinction between the two and then learn how to identify when you are falling into that trap. Having patience is a great tool but do not make that tool dull by turning it into procrastination."
